When to Book Your Newborn Photographer (And What Happens If You Wait Too Long)
I get this question a lot — usually from parents who are somewhere in their second trimester, just starting to think about newborn photos and wondering if they're already behind. The short answer is: probably not yet, but now is a great time to start looking.
Here's the longer answer, from someone who has been offering newborn photography in Ridgefield and across Fairfield County and Westchester County for years.
The ideal time to book: your second trimester
I recommend reaching out around 20 weeks, or roughly halfway through your pregnancy. This isn't about being type-A or overly organized. It's about availability.
Good newborn photographers in Fairfield County and Westchester book up quickly. There are only so many newborn sessions that can be scheduled in a given month, and the families who reach out early are the ones who get their pick of timing. By the time you're in your third trimester, many photographers — myself included — may have limited availability for your due date window.
Booking early also gives us time to do this properly: get to know each other, talk through your vision, and make sure everything is in place well before your due date arrives.
Why the timing of the session itself matters so much
Newborn sessions generally work best in the first 5 to 15 days of life. This is the window when babies are in their deepest, most settled sleep — when they'll curl up naturally, stay in those beautiful posed positions, and cooperate in the way that makes newborn photography look effortless.
After two or three weeks, babies become more alert, more opinionated, and harder to settle into poses. They're still incredibly beautiful and absolutely worth photographing — but the style and feel of the session changes. If you have your heart set on those classic, curled-up newborn images, the first two weeks is when we need to capture them.
What if my baby comes early?
This is exactly why booking well in advance matters. When you book with me during pregnancy, we pencil in a tentative photoshoot date about ten days after your due date, and then we adjust once your baby actually arrives. If your baby comes early, we move. If your baby comes late, we move again. I build this flexibility in intentionally, because babies famously do not follow schedules.
The key is that we're already in contact and the spot is held. That's what protects you.
What if I'm already past my due date — or my baby is already here?
Don't panic. Reach out immediately and tell me your baby's birthday. I will do everything I can to find a time that works, and depending on my schedule, we may still be able to capture your baby in that early newborn window.
I've had clients contact me after their baby was born, sometimes because they moved to the Fairfield County or Westchester area recently, sometimes because they just didn't realize they needed to book ahead. I've accommodated families in this situation more than once, and while I can't always guarantee availability, I will always try.
If your baby is past two weeks old, it doesn't mean the photos won't be beautiful. It just means we'll approach the session a little differently. Some of my favorite images come from babies who were a little older and a little more awake.
A note on planning ahead: YOU’LL THANK YOURSELF LATER!
Beyond just availability, there's something to be said for not having to think about this in those first exhausted, overwhelming, wonderful days after your baby arrives. When you've booked your photographer in advance, you know it's handled. You can focus entirely on your baby without adding "find a photographer" to the mental load of those early weeks.
That peace of mind is worth something too.

Frequently Asked Questions (AKA TL;DR)
-
The ideal time to book a newborn photographer in Fairfield County is around 20 weeks into your pregnancy, roughly your second trimester. This gives you the best chance of securing a spot in your delivery month, since newborn photographers typically book by due date and have limited monthly availability. Waiting until your third trimester means many dates may already be taken.
-
Yes. Most professional newborn photographers, including those serving Fairfield County CT and Westchester County NY, book sessions by due date rather than by a specific day. You reserve a spot in your delivery month during pregnancy, and then confirm the exact session date once your baby arrives. This protects your place in a limited schedule without locking you into a date that's impossible to predict.
-
Newborn sessions are best in the first 5 to 14 days of life. This is when babies sleep most deeply and settle most naturally into the posed positions associated with classic newborn photography. After two weeks, babies become more alert and sessions require a different approach. The photos are still beautiful, but the style shifts.
-
Reach out immediately. A good newborn photographer will do everything possible to accommodate you, especially if your baby is still in the first two weeks. If your baby is older, the session will look a little different but can still produce stunning images. The most important thing is to contact your photographer right away rather than waiting.
