What to Expect from a Lifestyle In-Home Newborn Session | Fairfield County, CT & Westchester County, NY

Booking an In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Session: 10 ThinGS TO KNOW

Welcoming a new baby is one of the most tender, fleeting experiences of your life. The sleepy newborn snuggles, the tiny fingers, the way your whole world quietly shifts overnight, and these are the moments worth preserving. A lifestyle in-home newborn session is one of the most meaningful ways to do exactly that.

Unlike traditional studio newborn photography, a in-home lifestyle newborn session takes place right in your own home, woven into the space where your family actually lives and loves. Real, warm, authentic moments will be captured while you cuddle your baby in your own bed, rock the baby in the nursery chair, or watch your toddler show off their toys and books to a newborn sibling in your playroom. Your spaces, your home, your life with a new family member.

If you're considering booking a session, here is everything you need to know before we get started.

1. Your Home Becomes Part of the Story

The magic of in-home lifestyle photography lies in capturing your family in its natural environment. Don’t worry about your home being picture-perfect. It’s all about the love, connection, and everyday moments in your space. The backdrop of every picture is your space: Your rugs, furniture, beds, crib, and rocking chair. I know that many new parents spend a lot of time and effort creating a beautiful nursery for their new arrival. An in-home session is the perfect place to show off that space.

2. Sessions are RELAXES, BUT I’LL GUIDE YOU EVER STEP OF THE WAY

Sessions run 60 to 90 minutes, with plenty of time built in for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes. Newborns set the pace, and there is never any rush.

Lifestyle sessions have a slower, more natural energy than traditional photo sessions. You are not expected to pose perfectly or know what to do with your hands. I'll gently coach you on where to stand, how to hold your baby, and when to just look at each other, and then I’LL step back and let the real moments unfold while I capture them.

3. THE WHOLE FAMILY IS WELCOME, PETS TOO

Siblings and dogs are absolutely encouraged. In-home sessions are a beautiful opportunity to document your family exactly as it is right now, and some of the most memorable images from any lifestyle newborn session are the unplanned ones: a toddler sneaking in a kiss, the family dog curling up next to baby, a big sibling studying the tiny new person with wide, curious eyes. Embrace the full picture. All of it is worth capturing.

4. The Session workflow is flexible for older siblings

Toddlers and preschoolers are unpredictable, and that is completely normal. They are navigating a huge transition and may not be thrilled about a stranger showing up with a camera on top of it. I have been in this situation many, many times, and I know how to work with it.

If your older child is hesitant at first, we'll start with baby-only images and give them time to warm up. If they come running in ready to be the center of attention, we'll lean right into that too. There is no wrong way for a sibling to show up, and I work with whatever the moment gives us.

I’m a noted toddler wrangler and will use any combination of silliness, patience, toys, games, and snack bribes to get great pictures of your toddler with their new baby sibling.

5. Natural Light Is the Goal, and I Come Prepared Either Way

Two things make the biggest difference before I arrive: open your curtains and turn off your overhead lights. That's really it. Natural window light is softer and more flattering than typical household overhead lights, and gives your images that warm, timeless quality that holds up for decades.

When I get there, the first thing I'll do is a quick walkthrough to find the best light in your home and map out where we'll shoot. And if it happens to be a dark, overcast day or your home gets a lot of shade, no need to worry. I always come prepared with backup lighting (a flash, a stand, etc.) so we can still achieve that same soft, beautiful look no matter what the weather decides to do.

6. You Do Not Need to Deep Clean Your Entire Home

Please do not stress about this. Focus on tidying the areas where most of the session will take place, typically the nursery, master bedroom, and living room. Simple touches go a long way: smooth out the bed linens, clear the nightstand, pick up the floor. That's really all you need.

A lived-in home is a loved home, and that is what we are here to capture.

7. Your Baby’s Comfort SETS THE PACE

One of the greatest advantages of an in-home session is that your baby is already in their most comfortable, familiar environment. Feeds, diaper changes, and cuddle breaks happen naturally throughout the session without any stress or rush. We follow your baby's lead, and we go at whatever pace feels right for your family.

Newborns are most cooperative when they are warm, fed, and comfortable, and being at home makes all of that so much easier.

8. Keep Wardrobe Simple and Comfortable

You do not need a wardrobe overhaul for your session. Neutral tones, soft fabrics, and minimal patterns tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your faces and your connection rather than your outfits. Think cozy and comfortable, think linen, cotton, soft knits. Whatever you'd actually wear on a quiet Sunday morning at home.

I also bring a selection of swaddle blankets and newborn outfits, so if you don't have something you love for the baby, I have you covered.

9. I Capture the Details, Not Just the Portraits

A lifestyle newborn session is not just about posed family photos. Some of the most beautiful images from a session are the small things: your baby's tiny feet, the way their hand wraps around your finger, the nursery details you spent months putting together, the way your toddler studies their new sibling's face. These details are what make your gallery feel personal, layered, and truly yours.

Years from now, it will be these images you reach for first.

10. The Best Time to Book Is Before Your Baby Arrives

Newborn sessions are typically best within the first 5 to 15 days after birth, when babies are still sleepy, curly, and brand new. I recommend getting on my calendar during your second or third trimester, as my schedule fills up quickly, especially during peak months. Also, see blog post When to Book Your Newborn Photographer.

Once your baby arrives, just reach out and we'll confirm the timing based on how you're both feeling and settling in. There is flexibility built in, and I'll do my best to make it easy.

(AND ONE BONUS) 11. TRUST THE PROCESS

I have photographed a lot of newborns. I can handle fussy babies, grouchy toddlers, emotional mamas, and anything in between. Even reluctant dads come around! You do not need to have it all together for this session, and in fact, the imperfect, unrehearsed moments often make the best images.

My job is to capture your family authentically and to make the whole experience feel easy and even enjoyable. By the time I leave, most families tell me they had no idea it would be that relaxed.
